Before you build anything, you need a solid foundation. For sightful living, that foundation is knowing your identity and purpose in God.
Identity in God
Your identity is who you are. It is not based on feelings, achievements, or other people’s opinions, but on what God has said about you.
When you know your identity in God, you stop living for likes, approval, or comparisons. You stop chasing fake popularity and trends. Instead, you live with confidence, security, and freedom in who God says you are.
In the beginning, right from creation,
- You were made in His image (Genesis 1:27). This means you were designed to reflect God’s character and creativity.
- You were chosen and loved by Him in advance (Ephesians 1:4-5). This means that He decided to make you His own and love you even before you knew Him.
With salvation through Jesus Christ
- You are forgiven of your sins and purified (1 John 1:9). So, you are no longer defined by your past deeds. You are free to fellowship and commune with God.
- You are a child of God (John 1:12), and so your worth is not in status or popularity but in being a true son or daughter of God.
- You are complete in Christ (Colossians 2:10), and so do not need toxic relationships, empty habits or cultural approval to feel complete. You get fulfilment by letting Jesus fill and guide you.
- You are Christ’s ambassador (2 Corinthians 5:20), and so should represent His kingdom wherever you go.
Purpose in God
Your purpose in God is the reason why you are alive here on earth. It is what God created you to do. It is not just about the career you choose or your life ambitions. They matter, but they are not the core. The core purpose is why you do what you do and who you do it for.
Your purpose is not based on the world’s culture or trends. It is based on God’s leading. This means that you do not choose a career or path just because everyone else is doing it. You do it because you are convinced in your spirit that you have been called to that path to honour God and serve humanity.
When you are clear about your purpose in God, you won’t get lost chasing trends, culture or distractions. You will stay focused and committed to your goals
God created you to do these
- Live for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11), praising, worshipping and trusting in Him
- Love Him and keep His commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13) by reverencing Him and ensuring that everything you do aligns with His commandments.
- Reflect Him (Matthew 5:16) by living in a way that your choices, behaviour and works point people toward God.
- Steward His gifts (1 Peter 4:10) by wisely using your time, money, skills, and even your eyesight to serve others.
- Fulfill His mission (Matthew 28:19-20) through sharing the gospel, helping others grow in faith, and impacting the world for His kingdom.
When you know your identity and purpose in God, you can apply the 7 pillars of sightful living with clarity and confidence
- Spiritual sight: Knowing who you are in God helps you see life through His eyes instead of culture’s lens.
- Visual purity: When your worth is in Christ, you don’t need harmful or impure images to feel validated.
- Digital intentionality: Purpose guides you to use technology as a tool for growth, not a trap for distraction.
- Physical vision wellness: You see your eyes as gifts from God, meant to be protected and cared for.
- Healthy living habits: You treat your body as a vessel for God’s purpose, not for careless indulgence.
- Community: You value friendships and relationships that affirm your identity in God and align with your purpose.
- Leadership and influence: You lead with God-given confidence, modeling sightful living and using your influence to lead people to Him.
